Week 4 Seminar

At our second seminar of the semester on Tuesday night, we had the opportunity to have the Chancellor of PASSHE speak with us. Dr. Cavanaugh has been the Chancellor since July 2008. He has also worked at the University of West Florida, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the University of Delaware. His knowledge of a variety of educational institutions was evident throughout the discussion. During the hour meeting, topics that were covered included the following: funding of institutions of higher education, pros and cons of standardized testing, and the goals of the Commission on Virtual High School.

Here the Chancellor can be seen in an annoucement to prospective high school students on why they should attend a PASSHE university.

Week 3

As interns we were able to really begin to feel at ease with our schedules and workload this week. On Tuesday, we had our first seminar. We handed in various assignments (Sponsor/Intern Contract, Learning Journal) and also gave our Harrisburg Case Study presentations. Through these presentations we were able to learn about transportation, political life, recreation, and other important aspects of living in the city.

Week 2

This week each of us began working at our various placement offices throughout Harrisburg. It was a four-day workweek (due to Labor Day) that was full of new challenges and experiences. At the end of the week, we all met for a social and discussed the events of the week. Everyone seemed very excited about the tasks that they were doing within their placement offices. Most of the group went out to eat together at Duke's Bar & Grill, with some of the interns off to busy lives at home.

Week 1

This week we had orientation at the Dixon University Center. For three days, we learned more about the program and the city of Harrisburg. In addition, we had various speakers come in, including past THIS interns, who gave us valuable advice.

The last day, we took a tour of the capitol building and the downtown area.
